4 Reasons to Invest in a Barndominium

If you are a fan of HGTV, no doubt you have seen the phenomenon that is known as Fixer Upper, a show that has turned into an empire with Chip and Joanna Gaines at the helm. In the last season of their show, one of the most popular episodes involved the couple renovating an old horse barn into a livable space, also known as a barndominium.

The outcome sparked a new craze and now we are seeing these unique homes pop up all over the place. Is a barndominium for you? I have four reasons for you to buy a barndominium.

1. They are affordable

Typically made from already existing metal barns, a barndominium is an affordable option for making your dream home a reality. After clearing out all the hay and animals, you are left with a huge blank canvas to let your creative juices fly.

The main cost comes with adding walls and HVAC to keep you cool which adds up to much less than building a house from the ground up. But don’t be surprised if living in a converted barn inspires you to build another barn and fill it with horses which are not affordable.

2. They are as unique as you are

Remember that blank canvas we were talking about? You can make your barndominium into anything that you can dream up. In the Fixer Upper episode, Chip and Joanna created a huge dining hall and kitchen on the bottom floor with most of the living space on the second floor.

You may choose to have a massive open living space on the main floor and convert the loft into bedrooms. Want one huge open space with a loft feel? The choice is yours.

3. They include wide open spaces

In most cases, where you find a barn, you find lots of land surrounding it. If you are looking for acreage and plenty of land to play and roam on, you will probably get it with a barndominium.

I love the look of a big barn set back on rolling acres with a pond tucked away to lounge by while I relax and read all day… wake me up! I am dreaming. But that dream can be your reality.

4. Men love the idea of them

Have you had a hard time convincing your husband to paint your house all white or to splurge on that awesome chandelier? I feel your pain but I have good news: turns out men love the idea of barndominiums.

As a matter of fact, it is one of the top things they search for on Pinterest! So you have a pretty good chance of bringing them over to your side and letting them release their inner cowboy while living in barn.

So, is this the perfect plan for you? Chances are you will be one of the first in your town to get in on this new idea for homes. But you better hurry if that is your goal because I think barndominiums are a country trend that is here to stay.

I can’t wait to see these lofty homes popping up all over the countryside. All that’s left to do is find a barn to convert into your dream home.
